As you may
already know, we started using the 3 year Rabies vaccine as of January, 2008.
Of course, we continue to use the one year vaccine when appropriate (juvenile
and geriatric pets). In our attempt to
provide the most current and efficacious health care, we have modified our
vaccine protocol yet again. Effective January 1, 2009, we began using the
3 feline year upper respiratory combination vaccine and the 3 year canine
distemper/parvo combination vaccine. While
there are some pets who are not candidates for these vaccines, we encourage all
eligible candidates to participate.
Vaccinating
every 3 years for most viruses has been proven to be safe and effective. The three year vaccines are recommended by
AAHA, AAFP, AVMA, and ACVIM, and are USDA approved. The reason for the change is that there are potential risks
associated with over-vaccinating such as adverse vaccine reactions, autoimmune
diseases, and possible cancers. While
these risks are uncommon, they do occur.
Your pet will still benefit from their annual wellness visits.
In addition to
the annual wellness exam, a fecal exam is included in the package price. You would be amazed and the number of
intestinal parasites we find every week. Please remember to bring a fecal
sample (walnut sized) for your pet's annual exam. At Oak Park
Veterinary Clinic, your pet's health is our #1 priority and we feel that this
change supports our dedication to you and your pet's health. Please feel free to ask us about the change
during your visit or when you call to make your pet's appointment.
